1. If it shakes, it breaks. Use adequate packing material. Consider double-boxing fragile items.
2. When your move date is 3 weeks away, pack a suitcase for a 3 week trip. Everything else goes in a box. Everything.
3. Don't fall prey to this mindset: "It's not so much stuff and we're not moving far. Let's just put it in our car." We've seen Jed Clampett-esque overstuffed cars. We've seen people throwing items into trash bins at the last minute. We also know what a disorganized mess it is to unpack all that at the new place. Do yourself a favor: box it all.
4. Consider the cost of moving an item. Maybe it's not so important to keep that 20 year old sofa bed when you determine how much it costs to move it.
